The recent poor performance of the Wallabies at the Rugby World Cup has focussed even more attention on the need for change and so we write now to advise you of where NSW Rugby stands on this issue.
NSW Rugby and Rugby Australia (RA) have been working in collaboration for many months to agree a new fully integrated model for the delivery of professional rugby. This includes a new contracting model for players through to improving our pathways and player development programs.
Driving this initiative is the goal of delivering long term success for our men’s and women’s teams at Super Rugby level and to produce high quality players that can contribute to the success of our national sides.
NSW Rugby is taking the lead in delivering this new model for Rugby in Australia. We are working with RA as part of the strategy to unite and act collectively to create a vision for the game and build a new structure that will deliver improved results both on and off the field.
We believe that in the most contested sports market in the world, the current federated model for professional rugby is unsustainable and so the Board of NSWRU has endorsed the decision to advance the complete integration of the professional game across the country.
NSW Rugby is also dealing with a very real financial challenge. The increasing costs of professional rugby against diminishing returns from commercial activities, plus reduced funding from RA means that we’ve had to make clear decisions, focusing on what has to happen for the good of the game.
A new Board will be created for the NSW Waratahs with directors appointed by RA and NSW Rugby, with this joint governance model supporting the co-ordination and cohesion of professional rugby in NSW. RA will fund 100% of the NSW Waratahs programs.
This new model will maximise the benefits from co-ordinating high-performance programs and implementing strategies and initiatives to drive improved results for professional rugby both on and off the field. The new model recognises that the Waratahs knowledge, expertise and experience in our own local market, with members, sponsors, stadium, etc will be vital in working with RA in supporting the national program.
We believe this reform is in the best interest of NSW Rugby, the NSW Waratahs and rugby in Australia.
And far from handing over the keys to RA as some suggest, we believe that the shared governance and high-performance model and NSW Rugby’s willingness to work collaboratively with all Unions will achieve the success that will drive the positive change in rugby that everyone is asking for.
The integrated approach still allows for local delivery and will maintain the proud history of NSW Rugby and the Waratahs which is critically important as we celebrate our 150th Anniversary in 2024.
